Mayotte is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, south of the Comoros Islands and east of Madagascar. The main island, Grande-Terre, is surrounded by several smaller islands, including Petite-Terre, Pamandzi, and M'Tsamboro. Mayotte is a French overseas department and is divided into four communes: Mamoudzou, Dzaoudzi, Koungou, and Bandrélé. Its total area is approximately 374 square kilometers (144 square miles) and its population is estimated to be around 270,000 people. The official language is French, but Mahorian, a local dialect of Comorian, is also widely spoken. The map of Mayotte shows its location in the Indian Ocean, the shape and layout of the islands, and the major roads and cities.
